He was the eleventh and youngest child of Catharina Geertruida Reynst (1829–1893) and John Ricus Couperus (1816–1902). John Ricus Couperus was a well-known colonial official, lawyer, and landheer or lord of the private domain (particuliere land) of Tjikopo in Java. He was a great-grandson of Governor of Malacca Abraham Couperus (1752–1813) and Governor of Ambon Willem Jacob Cranssen (1762–1821). His father was related to them through a female line that goes back to the middle of the 18th century.
