About the Book

"The Celebrity" by Winston Churchill is a novel that revolves around John Crocker, a friend of the Celebrity, who meets him again at Asquith resort. The Celebrity has taken the identity of a man named Charles Wrexell Allan for anonymity. At Asquith, the Celebrity meets Irene Trevor, the daughter of an Ohio state senator, and proposes marriage. She accepts, but when Marian Thorn, a more desirable woman, arrives, the Celebrity leaves Irene without breaking off the engagement, which goes against his own moral values. Later, the Celebrity goes to Mohair, the summer retreat of Mr. and Mrs. Farquhar Fenelon Cooke, where Marian Thorn is the niece of the Cookes. When the two go on a yacht trip to Bear Island, they find out that the man the Celebrity is impersonating has embezzled $100,000 from the Miles Standish Bicycle Company. A detective, Mr. Dunn, comes to Bear Island, and Irene Trevor demands that the Celebrity be turned over to the authorities. The Celebrity is hidden in a cave for the night. The story concludes with the Celebrity leaving the three behind to escape into Canada, while John Crocker and Irene Thorn become romantically involved and later marry. They meet the Celebrity again in Paris, who reveals that Mr. Allen, the man he impersonated, has been posing as the Celebrity and traveling through Europe on a book signing tour.
