Fritz Muller

Johann Friedrich Theodor Müller (March 31, 1822 – May 21, 1897), commonly known as Fritz Müller (Brazilian Portuguese: and Müller-Desterro), was a German scientist who relocated to southern Brazil, where he lived in and around the German town of Blumenau, Santa Catarina. He researched the natural history of the Atlantic forest south of So Paulo while there, and was an early supporter of Darwinism. He spent the rest of his life in Brazil. Müllerian mimicry bears his name. Müller was born the son of a preacher in the village of Windischholzhausen, near Erfurt, Thuringia, Germany. Müller received a conventional scientific education at the universities of Berlin (BSc in Botany) and Greifswald, culminating in a doctorate in Biology. He later opted to pursue medicine. He began to doubt religion as a medical student and became an atheist in 1846, joining the Free Congregations and embracing free love. He did not graduate despite finishing the course because he refused to take the graduation oath, which included the line "so help me God and his sacred Gospel."
