About Author

Edward P. Roe

He was born in Moodna, a town that is now part of New Windsor, New York. He went to Auburn Theological Seminary and Williams College to learn. His first job was as chaplain of the Second New York Cavalry, U.S.V., in 1862. His second job was as chaplain of Hampton Hospital in Virginia in 1864. From 1866 to 1874, he led the First Presbyterian Church in Highland Falls, New York. After moving to Cornwall-On-Hudson in 1874, he spent all of his time writing stories and gardening. During the American Civil War, he wrote letters to the New York Evangelist every week. After the war, he gave speeches and wrote for magazines about it. A. Paulina Sands married him in 1863, and they had a number of children. Charles T. Tatham is an Olympic fencer, and his daughter Sarah married him. His daughter Pauline married the painter Henry Charles Lee. The Edward Payson Roe Memorial Park in Cornwall-On-Hudson, New York, is named after him. In his lifetime, his books were very famous, especially with middle-class readers in the US and UK. They were also translated into a number of European languages. They had a strong moral and religious reason for writing, which helped break down the Puritan bias against fantasy in America. One thing that people always said about him was that his writing looked like lectures.
