About Author

Theodore Clarke Smith

From 1903 till 1938, Theodore Clarke Smith (1870-1960) taught American history at Williams College. Smith was a prominent educationalist and content reformer who served on the Curriculum Committee between 1911 to 1927 and on its Advisory Committee from 1911 to 1935. He penned the well-known The Wars Between England and America (1914) and a two-volume biography of U.S. President James A. Garfield (1925). Smith participated in discussions regarding the future of American historiography at the American Historical Association and elsewhere. He criticized James Harvey Robinson's attitude, claiming that he did not "consider it necessary to be impartial or even fair." Williams College houses an archive of his correspondence with Harry A. Garfield.
