He was a journalist for various publications, including The Daily News and The Standard, and was born in London. Herring wrote a lot, and his books on printing and producing paper were well-liked at the time. His writings of note include "Paper and Paper Making, Ancient and Modern" and "The Paper Trade." He belonged to the Royal Society of Literature as well. In 1896, Herring died.
