Charles M. Blackford

Charles Minor Blackford (1833-1903) was a Virginia lawyer, author, and Confederate Army officer during the American Civil War. His wartime correspondence with his wife, later published, provides valuable insights into life in the Confederate Army. Blackford served in various campaigns and battles, including Manassas, Gettysburg, and Appomattox. After the war, Blackford practiced law and became the president of the People's National Bank of Lynchburg. He was a charter member and president of The Virginia Bar Association. Blackford also had involvement with the Virginia Midland Railroad, serving as a director and legal counsel. He wrote a legal history of the railroad in 1881. In 1894, Blackford and his wife privately published their memoir, "Memoirs of Life in and Out of the Army in Virginia During the War Between the States." His account of Appomattox was praised by historian Douglas Southall Freeman. The memoirs provide important firsthand information about the experiences and conditions of Confederate soldiers.
