About Author

David MacRitchie

David MacRitchie was a Scottish folklorist and antiquarian who lived from 16 April 1851 to 14 January 1925. He argued that fairy tales originated with an aboriginal race who inhabited the British Isles before Celts and other cultures came. William Dawson MacRitchie and Elizabeth Elder MacRitchie had a son named David MacRitchie. He was born in Edinburgh and went to the Edinburgh Southern Academy, Edinburgh Institute, and University of Edinburgh. He did not receive a degree, but he did become a Chartered Accountant. His father was an East India Company surgeon. MacRitchie created the Gypsy Legend Society in 1888 to research the history and legend of Gypsies. He also belonged to various folklore societies. In 1914, he was elected to the Council of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, where he served as vice-president from 1917 to 1920. He was nominated as a trustee for Lord Abercromby's gift for an Archaeology department at the University of Edinburgh because of his interest in archaeology. He was also a member of the Scottish Arts Club and the Philosophical Institution's Vice-President. He was the treasurer of the Scottish Anthropological and Folklore Society from 1922 until his death.
