Thomas W. Hanshew

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Thomas W. Hanshew was an American actor and playwright who lived from 1857 until 1914. When he was just 16 years old, Hanshew started his acting career by taking on small roles with Ellen Terry's company. He later played significant parts alongside Clara Morris and Adelaide Neilson. Later, in London, where he spent his final years, he was connected to a publishing business. He published more than 150 novels under various pen names, including "Charlotte May Kingsley," some of which he co-wrote with his wife Mary E. Hanshew. The consulting detective "Hamilton Cleek'' (the assumed name of the King of Maurevania), a former thief who now works for law enforcement, was Hanshew's most well-known character. Cleek is referred to as "the man of the forty faces' ' for his extraordinary ability to pass for another person. Cleek, who is based in London's Clarges Street and who serves as the protagonist of dozens of short stories that were first published in 1910 and later compiled in a number of novels, is frequently consulted by Inspector Narkom of Scotland Yard.
