Richard Soule (1815–1877) was a writer, editor, and teacher from the United States. His lexicographic work and contributions to the study of the English language are what he is most well-known for. Soule was raised in Maine and went to Bowdoin College to study math, Greek, and Latin. Following graduation from college, he worked as a teacher before transitioning into the role of editor for a number of periodicals, including the Portland Advertiser and the New York Tribune. The most well-known book by Soule, "A Dictionary of English Synonymes: Synonymous or Parallel Expressions," was released in 1854. The book became popular right away and is still valued as a useful tool by authors and public presenters today. Soule was a well-known lexicographer in addition to being a well-known teacher. He was the principal of Portland High School before becoming the administrator of Massachusetts' public schools.
