About the Book
Anna Holstein's book "Three Years in Field Hospitals of the Army of the Potomac" is a compelling and highly personal account of her experiences as a nurse during the war. The book provides a distinctive viewpoint on the trying circumstances and difficulties experienced by medical professionals in the middle of one of the most turbulent times in American history. While caring for the Army of the Potomac's injured troops, Holstein experienced many successes, tragedies, and deep moments of compassion that she shares with readers via her colorful and moving tale. Holstein's book gives a priceless window into the sacrifices and heroics of those who cared for the wounded and delivers a fascinating tale that highlights the human cost of war with a combination of historical knowledge and emotional depth.
Anna Morris Holstein (1824-1900) was an American organizational leader, Civil War nurse, and author. She served as a nurse in the Army of the Potomac for three years during the Civil War, working in various field hospitals and ultimately becoming the matron-in-chief of a hospital caring for 3,000 seriously wounded soldiers after the Battle of Gettysburg. Holstein's experiences during the war were documented in her book, "Three Years in Field Hospitals of the Army of the Potomac," which provided a personal and vivid account of the challenges faced by medical personnel on the battlefield. Holstein was also actively involved in historical preservation and commemoration efforts. She was the founder and first regent of the Centennial and Memorial Association of Valley Forge, working to preserve and restore George Washington's headquarters at Valley Forge and make it accessible to the public. She was also a regent of the Valley Forge Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.). Anna Holstein's contributions to the preservation of historical sites and her dedication to nursing during the Civil War left a lasting legacy. She passed away in 1900, but her impact on historical awareness and honoring the sacrifices of those who served during the war continued to be recognized.
