A Daughter of the Land tells the story of Kate Bates, a young lady with ambition that she must begin on her own to achieve. Kate is the last child of a big family and realises the meaning of hard work. She needs a chance at life while her father wants that she stay at home and continue work there. Kate quits and her family disowns her. She has a tough life and experiences many a problem before things finally turn around for her. This is a tale of hard labour and true love. It is also the story of lots of women at the time. There are ordinary women, bold women, needy women and shrewd women. Kate's real aim is to own and develop a large farm. The characters are human and the conditions are authentic. After refusing the easy way to her dream, she hurts through a bad marriage but finally obtains her land and attains happiness.

About Author

Gene Stratton-Porter

Geneva Grace Stratton born on a farm in Wabash County, Indiana on 17 August 1863, was an American author, nature photographer, and naturalist. Living in a rural area, Gene got little academic schooling and alternatively made nature her classroom. Gene revealed an interest in nature and wildlife from an early age. In 1886, Gene married Charles D. Porter, a druggist in Geneva, Indiana. In 1917, Stratton-Porter requested legislative support for the conservation of Limberlost Swamp (a natural preserve for wild plants, moths and birds) and other wetlands in Indiana. She made her launch with The Song of the Cardinal. Among her best known books are Freckles, A Girl of the Limberlost, and The Harvester. During World War I Stratton-Porter went to California and established in 1922 Gene Stratton Porter film company to produce movies of her books. She died in a deadly car accident in 1924. She was entombed in Hollywood Cemetery in California.
