He joined the Jesuit Order, lived in Rome, and was named keeper of Florence's galleries in 1773, where he rose to the position of president of the Accademia della Crusca. He then pursued studies in language, Etruscan art, and Italian painting. Corssen protested in the name of his true contributions to philology and archaeology in response to the insults he received from later writers on the Etruscan language.
