He was known for his Hashknife Hartley series, which combined the Western and detective genres, and also created other characters like Cultus Collins and Sad Sontag. Tuttle's writing was praised for its authenticity and detail, stemming from his experiences working on ranches in California and Arizona.
In addition to his writing, Tuttle was a semi-professional baseball player and served as the president of the Pacific Coast Baseball League from 1935 to 1943.
