Lilian C. Garis, born Lilian C. McNamara on October 20, 1873, in the United States, was a prolific author of juvenile fiction. Before becoming an established writer, she made history as the first female reporter for the Newark Evening News in New Jersey. Lilian’s literary career spanned from the early 1910s to the 1940s, during which she authored hundreds of books, primarily aimed at young readers. She wrote under her own name as well as several pen names, including Margaret Penrose and Laura Lee Hope. Her most notable works include the Melody Lane series and the Girl Scouts series, which captured the imagination of young audiences with tales of adventure and personal growth. Lilian married Howard R. Garis, with whom she shared a long and fulfilling partnership. The couple had two children, Roger and Cleo. Lilian’s contributions to children's literature were significant, and she is remembered for her dedication to creating stories that both entertained and taught valuable life lessons. Lilian Garis passed away on April 19, 1954, at the age of 80 in Newark, New Jersey, leaving behind a lasting legacy in children's fiction.
