About Author

Bessie Marchant

Bessie Marchant (1862–1941) was a prolific author of adventure books with young women as the main characters. At the age of 27, she wed Baptist minister Jabez Ambrose Comfort, who was 28 years her senior. Shortly after the birth of her daughter Constance in 1891, she started penning articles for publications. The majority of her writings were published under the pen name Bessie Marchant, though she also occasionally used Mrs. J.A. Comfort or Bessie Marchant Comfort. She is also credited with writing a few books for boys that were released under the pen name John Comfort. Despite never having left England, Marchant, who was born in Debden Court Farm, Petham, Kent, authored nearly 150 books with settings all around the globe. Her early books, like "Broken Barriers" and "Under Clear Skies," were straightforward romances set in England within an evangelical Christian background, typically Primitive Methodism. Early editions of Bessie Marchant books often don't have a dust jacket; instead, the cover and spine are printed with an illustration.
