Freiherr de Friedrich Heinrich Karl La Motte-Fouqué (12 February 1777 – 23 January 1843) was a German writer and novelist, known for his contributions to the Romantic literary movement. Born in Brandenburg an der Havel, he came from a family of French Huguenot descent, as indicated by his surname. His grandfather, Heinrich August de la Motte Fouqué, had served as a general under Frederick the Great, while his father was a Prussian army officer, a background that would influence his later works.
Fouqué is best remembered for his fantasy and romantic works, which are imbued with the ideals of heroism, honor, and the supernatural.
