About Author

H. G. Keene

Henry George Keene CIE (1826–March 26, 1915) was an English medieval and modern Indian historian. Keene was born at Haileybury's East India College. His father was Henry George Keene (1781-1864). He attended Rugby School and Wadham College, Oxford, before moving to India in 1847 as an East India Company employee. His formal career was brief, but he began to write. Keene worked in the Bengal Civil Service from 1847 to 1882. He was Superintendent at Dehra Doon during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Keene's following career was marked by many disagreements with his superiors, and when he reached the age of 35, he had not advanced above the rank of district and sessions Judge. He retired with the CIE decoration and a literary fame. Keene died on March 26, 1915, at his home in Westward Ho!.
