About the Book

The Regent Vol. II explores the emotional struggles of a woman trapped in a restrictive marriage within a rigid, conservative society. Set in the city of Vetusta, the story delves into a world shaped by social expectations and personal yearnings. Central to the narrative is the tension between private desires and public roles, as the protagonist faces the pressure to conform to societal norms while seeking emotional freedom. The narrative further examines the complexity of human relationships, particularly the power dynamics between clerical authority and personal ambition. As the protagonist navigates her constrained life, the story highlights the friction between spiritual devotion and earthly temptations. Through the depiction of both secular and clerical spheres, the novel portrays a society steeped in moral conflicts and hypocrisy, with characters struggling to balance their inner desires with their external roles. The text enhances the emotional depth of each character's inner turmoil, exploring themes of repression, societal expectation, and human complexity.

About Author

Leopoldo Alas

Leopoldo Enrique García-Alas y Ureña, widely known by his pen name Clarín, was a Spanish novelist and prominent critic. Born on April 25, 1852, in Zamora, Spain, he became one of the leading figures in Spanish realism. Clarín's work is characterized by his strong advocacy of liberalism and his outspoken anti-clerical stance, which made him both a controversial and influential voice in his time. His incisive critiques, especially through his written articles, also known as paliques, contributed significantly to the cultural and political discourse of 19th-century Spain. Despite his sharp criticisms of society and the church, his works are deeply insightful and reflect a keen understanding of human psychology. His most famous novel, La Regenta, examines themes of repression, societal expectation, and the complexities of human desire. Clarín's works have earned him a lasting place in Spanish literary history. He died on June 13, 1901, in Oviedo, Spain, at the age of 49. He was married to Onofre García Argüelles y García-Bernardo, and they had one child, Leopoldo García-Alas García-Argüelles. His parents were Leocadia Ureña and Genaro García-Alas.
